Saddle for Paint/Tb cross!?

by Admin on June 3, 2010

I'm looking for a dressage saddle for my horse. He is about 16hh and about 950-1000lbs. I currently have an all purpose that is 18", narrow/medium tree, and about a 4-5" gullet. It almost fits him-but it is a little too narrow and the gullet sits very nearly on his spine. He has a short back and loonng withers. I'm planning on trying a few 16.5" saddles, medium width, and a 5-6" gullet on him. Does this sound okay-any opinions? I would prefer to buy a saddle that fits him without a wither riser-but I also ahve to buy used. Any helpful opinions would be much appreciated.
He does need some weight! He's just turned 4 so he's still in the yo-yo and grow phase! He does have a rounder barrel and a nice fleshy back/spine.

Sounds like your horse needs some weight. My 20 yr old 15.1 hh QH gelding weighs 1,000 full fleshed and he’s NOT an old bull dog type QH.

You should probably get a med-wide tree which tends to fit the TBs and Running QH types.

There’s a good start for you.

yeah i would may be try a synthetic saddle the 1′s that look like leather they are really light weight and u can adjust the gullets on them and they are easy to care for and i have seen some on ebay there is a really nice crump synthetic on there but i don’t remember if it was close contact or dressage

4-5" gullet is pretty tight and my tb has a 6" in gullet and hes got a small barrel and withers to the sky. i just trail ride him, and I use a thoroughgood cut back 16.5 saddle m width
