Saddle decision..what to do?

by Admin on May 29, 2010

Ok, so I've finally found two saddles that will fit my extremly hard to fit, high whithered, TB. One is a dressage saddle and one is an all purpose. I do dressage and hunters, but if I get a dressage saddle I'll either be stuck getting another saddle or limited when it comes to what I can do. I am so torn over which one to get, they're both really nice saddles. [I can not afford to get both right now, unless I can sell my old tack and get another job..]

My horse is a jumper and she loves it, so I'm kind of leaning towards the all purpose. She hasn't been worked properly in the last 6 months, so that's why we're mainly sticking to dressage for this next year.

So should I go ahead and buy the dressage saddle and save up to buy an all purpose/jumping saddle next season? Or should I just get the all purpose and never have to worry about getting another saddle? The dressage saddle is a lot more comfortable, but that means no jumping...
I don't jump in the dressage saddle over 18". It's not good for the horse's back. When I'm doing hunter I do 2'6 - 3' courses. Dressage saddles don't help your equitation over a jump..so no thanks.

You can do lower level dressage in an all purpose saddle, but you can’t jump in a dressage saddle. However, to do the higher levels of dressage, you need to have your leg in the position that a dressage saddle provides. And an all purpose saddle puts you in the correct and safe position to jump. So if you can only buy one, go with the all-purpose. If you decide to get the dressage saddle and want to save for another saddle, make the 2nd saddle a jumping saddle, not just an all purpose.

Since there is the possibility that you could get both, go for it! So yes, buy the dressage saddle, and save up for the all purpose.

EDIT-
@I.Stath: What?! You jumped your horse four feet in a roping saddle??? That causes SERIOUS damage to the horse. What an idiot!

get the dressage saddle with Velcro knee rolls that way it can be turned into an all purpose [very handy]

or have it the other way round get the all purpose with the knee rolls so you can turn it into a dressage but it depends what you feel comfortable jumping in.

i know people who do everything in a dressage saddle

why cant you jump with a dressage saddle hunter jumps aren’t that big and if it is the one that is better for you go for it

I would get the dressage saddle. I’m not a big fan of all purpose saddles, you can’t get a good close contact seat for riding hunters, and you can’t get a good deep seat with long leg for dressage. Doing dressage for a while as you search for a jumping saddle that will fit your horse and get the money to buy one won’t hurt you or your horse, in fact it will probably help. Especially if you are sticking to dressage for the next year or so, get a saddle that will work with you, rather than one you’re fighting with.
