Dressage Riders!!-What Size Dressage Girth Do I Need!?

by Admin on May 5, 2010

I just bought a Prestige Optimax saddle and I now need a girth. My TB usually wears a 50" girth, so what sized dressage girth would he need? I've heard all sorts of ways like "Subtract 20" and "Divide by 2 and then add two inches". I wont have the saddle until later this week and I have a clinic Sat. so I need to get the girth! Also I do not have anyone to borrow a girth from.

Thanks!

Well, the only real way to know is to measure because different saddle makers have different length billets. You can guess if you want to, which is all those little formulas do. Or you can buy 2 or 3 girths in various sizes and return the ones that don’t fit.

i would try the same girth first then change sizes you would be surprised on how it fits it is the horse belly you are measuring not the saddle.

yeah i’ve just looked it up, and some people say subtract 20 but others are saying that 50" is more suited to about 26" in dressage girths (:

Normally you subtract 20" from your close contact/all purpose girth length. But, depending on billet length, that might or might not be right. If your cc saddle has long billets, then subtracting 20" is likely to get your girth too short. Likewise, if the cc billets are really short, then subtracting 20" is likely to get your dressage girth too long.

I hope this help you!

I have 2 horses. I use a 48" regular girth for both, but one could go up and one could go down. I believe I have a 26" dressage girth for them, but it could be a 28". Somewhere around there should work for you.
