Dressage saddle and all-purpose/jumping saddle sizes?

by Admin on May 2, 2010

Ok, I have a question. If you ride in a certain size of all-purpose or jumping saddle, would your dressage saddle be the same size? Or is the fit different? For example, say you ride in a 15 inch jumping saddle. Would you also use a 15 inch dressage saddle? Or would the size change?

I’m the same size in jumping and dressage saddles, but it depends on the individual saddles- a dressage saddle has bigger knee blocks and a deeper seat, therefore you’ll probably need a slightly bigger size (1/2"-1 1/2"). I ride in the same size for both because my jumping saddle has the Biomex seat (by Stubben) so I ordered up a 1/2" – 1".

Hope this helps & remember that sizing varies between brands / individual saddles for the horse as well- my guy takes a 31cm Prestige and 26cm Stubben.

The fit may be diferent because you are sitting in a totally different position in jumping than you do in dressage.

It should be about the same, the saddles are shaped differently so you will be in a different position but your butt should still sit level in the middle of the saddle.

You should take the same size, however the fit will feel quite different, mostly because of the deeper seat, and you might feel like the dressage saddle fits smaller than the A/P saddle. You can either just get used to it because it’s really fine, or you can get your dressage saddle 1/2" bigger than your jumping saddle.
