All purpose and dressage girth sizes?

by Admin on May 2, 2010

When I use my all purpose saddle I use a 50" girth. I'm thinking on getting a dressage saddle but I don't know what size of dressage girth would fit my horse.

Typically you can subtract 20" from the long girth size to get the dressage girth size. In this case your horse would most likely be a 30".

If you get your horse a girth between 18-24" you will have to squeeze him into it, I don’t think a dressage saddle will have billets long enough for that.

It really depends on the saddle- some have long girth straps attached and some are shorter (not as short as an all purpose saddle’s though). For instance, my mothers dressage saddle uses a 24 inch dressage girth on her QH. I have a full draft and use 26inch girth, but my saddle has a lot longer straps. If my mother used my saddle, she probably would only need a 15 inch girth or so, lol My all purpose one has a 60 inch girth.

Most likely, you will need a 18-24 inch, but like I said, it depends on the saddle.

when you get your saddle fitted ask them to bring along some girths too failing thatwait till you get your saddle and borrow some girths to determine the size
